Google product reviews has been a powerful tool for consumers across the world. Our friends at Google understand the importance of providing us with as much information as possible with ease and accuracy.
The effect that COVID has had in our lives is that now more than ever people shop online. In March of last year, Forbes found that internet use had gone up 70%. It’s only natural that the amount of online shops and opportunities to purchase products online has increased tremendously in the past year and because of that Google has decided to design a new update for product reviews.
On the 8th of April Google released the Product Reviews Algorithm Update, which purpose is to reward product reviews that share in-depth research which will help consumers know the products better, rather than short content that simply summarizes a number of products. The update is currently affecting only English language reviews and is set to impact Google Discover results as well as Search.
Google also shared some additional useful questions to consider for those who have product reviews on their website:
Do your reviews:
Express expert knowledge about products where appropriate?
Show what the product is like physically, or how it is used, with unique content beyond what’s provided by the manufacturer?
Provide quantitative measurements about how a product measures up in various categories of performance?
Explain what sets a product apart from its competitors?
Cover comparable products to consider, or explain which products might be best for certain uses or circumstances?
Discuss the benefits and drawbacks of a particular product, based on research into it?
Describe how a product has evolved from previous models or releases to provide improvements, address issues, or otherwise help users in making a purchase decision?
Identify key decision-making factors for the product’s category and how the product performs in those areas? For example, a car review might determine that fuel economy, safety, and handling are key decision-making factors and rate performance in those areas.
Describe key choices in how a product has been designed and their effect on the users beyond what the manufacturer says?
It is important to note that if your website includes product reviews content, the rankings will be impacted along with organic traffic, as from now on google will choose to reward reviews that are more detailed and offer better quality of content.
